The Precarious Likability of White Women
What 'girl' aesthetics and the Taylor tipping point says about the current state of white womanhood.
This Valentine’s Day I went to see Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s Restless Leg tour at the Beacon Theatre on the UWS. The two-hour comedy show chronicled their 30-year friendship, beginning with a throwback bit to the 90s in which they dressed like teenagers re-enacting their early Second City days in Chicago to Semisonic’s Semi-Charmed Life. With majority of the audience being millennials (they surveyed the audience at the beginning), we were easily coaxed into the comfort of the nostalgia as they played a montage of clips from early aughts music videos, movies and pop culture moments on the screen behind them. The following acts included a remake of SNL’s Weekend Update (with a surprise guest appearance by Maya Rudolph as Whitney Houston!), individual attempts at stand-up (Poehler prefaced that they’re not stand-up comedians and wanted to practice some jokes on us), and a cozy Q&A in their PJs.
