I recently went on a date with a woman. I knew it was going to be a revealing evening when, 20 minutes in, she complained that she always goes for “confused straight girls” (😳).

My bi-curious straight friend matched with me on Hinge 😂

A few hours later, we’re back at her place and I find myself liking every other song that comes on one of her Spotify playlists. Every few minutes I say, “I love this song!” To which she responds, “you know this song is actually about a closeted lesbian right?” (I wish I could remember what the songs were, but I was embarrassingly high out of my mind from one bong hit). I was shocked at the idea that all these years I’ve been singing along to songs I didn’t realize were about being gay, when I myself, have been trying to figure out my sexuality.

The realization got me thinking—how much is my sexuality shaped by algorithms? When I was a kid, my cultural inputs were under my control—listening to music involved choosing a particular cassette or CD, activel…
